Dominic de Souza writes vivid and untamed worlds: epic fantasy, epic sci-fi, young adult, and some children's stories. Born in New Zealand, raised in Australia, and educated in Fiji and France, he was the eldest of eight in a semi-feral family that read the local library dry. He wrote his first novel at thirteen, again at sixteen, and graduated from the Writer's Institute for Children's Literature. Twenty-five years in marketing and design paid for the worlds without end he wanted to write about. In the pandemic years he founded LegendFiction, a community for storytellers who treat fiction as vocation. His books include The Ring of Fantasy, a children's adventure for reading aloud, Hero Theory, twenty-five short stories for young men, and two books on imaginative fiction, Legends of the Fall and A Guide to On Fairy Stories. He publishes short stories on Substack and is writing a grim modern retelling of Neverland.

Conversation angles
Specific subjects grounded in Dominic's books, work in progress, and recorded appearances.
- A grim, modern-day Neverland
- The novel in progress: what a retelling keeps from Barrie, what it has to break, and why the island gets darker when you set it now.
- A children's fantasy that opens in the Blitz
- The Ring of Fantasy starts with a German bomber crashing into an English factory and a muddy ring in the crater. What a read-aloud for ages 5 to 11 has to do in every chapter.
- Why faith-inspired fiction gets smaller than it needs to be
- The argument of Legends of the Fall: sermon-shaped stories, the religious box and the market box, and the creative freedom of myth, danger, and sub-creation.
- What Tolkien understood about secondary worlds
- On Fairy-Stories as a working philosophy for writers: Escape, recovery, eucatastrophe, and why fairy stories were never for children.
- The stories men live by
- Hero Theory's twenty-five heroes, kings and prisoners, capes and chains, and why a story trains courage before the gym does.
- The thirteen-year-old with the stick
- A first novel at thirteen, Star Wars crashed into Jurassic Park, the eldest of eight, and what survives of that kid in the adult books.
